CHAPTER FOUR

NOW THAT I knew for certain that there was another sniper in the area, one who by now was certainly hunting me, the whole nature of the game had changed.

I cursed myself for the fool I was. He must have been watching me and the kids, then followed me topside to make sure I didn’t complete my mission.

This bastard had been one step ahead of me all along.

I just couldn’t work out why a Russian sniper would want to keep Hitler alive. There was something going on here that I was missing, but I quickly decided that it would be pointless to waste my time speculating. My top priority had to be finding the entrance to the tunnel that led into the Führerbunker. It took a few more minutes for me to realise that the answer was staring me in the face – when the sniper shot at Martin and the kids, it must have been because they were getting too close to it, or he wouldn’t have revealed his presence. If I could get them to retrace their steps with me, they could lead me straight to it.

I dragged myself vertical and headed back down the tunnel, making my way back to their nest.

I found Martin’s body only a few hundred meters down the line, sprawled across the tracks. The kids’ bodies were spaced out beyond him at intervals, shot down as they tried to flee. My stomach lurched in horror. At first I thought the sniper must have put paid to them, but after I forced myself to look more closely I saw they had been killed by machine gun fire.

I heard sounds of movement behind me, back towards Mohrenstraße. I ducked down an access tunnel and drew my knife. Then the bombardment began again, up above. I looked back down the tunnel towards the station and saw torches casting the shadows of SS troops. These had to be the bastards who’d killed Martin and the kids. These fuckers, it would be a pleasure to kill.

I counted five men, invisible in their black uniforms as soon as they stepped out of the torchlight. They vanished into the station and the torches were shut off, and there was no indication whatsoever that they were there. Either they were guarding the tunnel or they were lying in wait for me or the Russian. Either way, I needed them gone. I clasped the knife tighter and crept out of my hiding place, relieved to be back in my comfort zone.

The secret here would be to kill so silently that none of the remaining Nazis knew they were being picked off. Normally it would have been more of a challenge, but the barrage helped mask my approach.

By my reckoning, the first soldier was at the point where the station gave way to the tunnel, crouching down, hidden in the shadow of the platform itself. I was on the same side of the tunnel, so I walked as slowly as I could, sideways on to him.
